SOKCHO, Jan. 16 (Korea Bizwire) — The coastal city of Sokcho in Gangwon Province has pioneered the country’s first-ever beach media art exhibition, attracting substantial interest from both locals and tourists.
According to city officials on January 15, approximately 2,000 visitors attended “Sea of Light, Sokcho” during its first two days of official operation, which began on January 10.
The multimedia installation, spanning 70 meters wide and 15 meters high, is currently running on Fridays and Saturdays near the south entrance of Sokcho Beach. It marks the first instance in South Korea of a media art exhibition being staged directly on beach sand.
The city launched this innovative project with provincial funding support, aiming to transform Sokcho Beach into a year-round tourist destination.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: the first allows visitors to view the installation from elevated areas such as stairs, while the second part invites them onto the beach itself to capture photos with the display.
Since its official opening, the exhibition has gained significant attention through social media platforms. Encouraged by the positive response, city officials are planning to expand the content offerings to coincide with the summer beach season.
Currently, the shows run twice every Friday and Saturday, at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., with each performance lasting 30 minutes. The city plans to adjust these operating hours in consideration of changing sunset times.
“We will strive to establish this as Sokcho’s signature year-round nighttime tourist attraction,” a city official stated.
