BLOOMINGTON, IN, Aug. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – After 17 years of hosting Professional Learning Communities at Work™ Institutes for thousands of educators in North America, Solution Tree — one of the nation’s premier educational publishers and professional development providers — has announced that it is holding its first institute abroad at Singapore American School, October 17-19, 2015. The PLC at Work™ Institute for International Schools will focus on the unique needs and challenges of international schools.
“We have an increasing number of international school attendees at our events each year,” said Jeffrey C. Jones, CEO of Solution Tree. “There are also 10 international PLC model schools featured on allthingsplc.com, and more on the way. Being featured on All Things PLC is no small accomplishment. Applications from international schools have increased dramatically.”
The PLC at Work™ process is recognized as a powerful strategy for sustained, substantive school improvement. Based on the work of Richard DuFour, Rebecca DuFour, Robert Eaker, and Mike Mattos, PLCs are driven by three big ideas: focus on learning, build a collaborative culture, and focus on results. In PLCs, teachers work in collaborative teams and all students learn at high levels.
For Singapore American School, adopting the PLC process was a matter of going from good to great. “We knew that our school was exceptional and that most of our students learned at high levels,” says Dr. Chip Kimball, superintendent of Singapore American School. “But we also knew there were students we weren’t reaching.
“When we decided to move from being a school focused on exemplary teaching to a school focused on high levels of learning for all students, that was the transformative moment for us,” he added.
The institute will pair international school teachers with US presenters to ensure that the international school perspective is represented. For attendees just beginning to explore PLCs, the institute will provide a base of knowledge and practice. For those already implementing PLCs, it is an opportunity to revisit the PLC mission, introduce new staff to the process, and hear answers to new questions.
