1 in 3 Seoulites Feel They Are “Extremely Isolated”

SEOUL, Nov. 13 (Korea Bizwire)A new survey has found that 1 out of 3 Seoulites perceive themselves as living in extreme isolation from society.

According to an online survey conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government between October 1 and 15, 28.8 percent of 1,000 Seoul residents (288 individuals) between the ages of 20 and 64 said they thought they were living “extremely isolated lives.”

In addition, 21.1 percent of respondents (211 individuals) said they were suffering from “extreme loneliness.”

The high levels of isolation and loneliness felt by individuals did not differ much across different genders and ages.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will be holding a public discussion to address the issue of isolation based on the recent study on Thursday at Seoul City Hall.

Various experts and researchers in relevant fields are expected to propose solutions to the social issues that are associated with isolation and loneliness.

Hwang Chi-yeong, the Seoul city official who overlooks the city’s welfare policies, said that the increase of social isolation and loneliness are contributing to today’s social dangers.

“It’s time that welfare policies provide a measure to counter this,” said Hwang.
