SEOUL, June 3 (Korea Bizwire)A mutation occurring in a BRCA1/2 gene is seen as a primary factor that raises the risk of breast and ovarian cancer among women, and prostate cancer among men.

What would you do if your fiance had a DNA mutation that could cause breast cancer?

According to a survey conducted by Daerlim St. Mary’s Hospital of 1,200 single men and wineb in their 20s and 30s, 25 percent said they would cancel the wedding.

Sorted by gender, 23 percent of men (117 respondents) and 28 percent of women (129 respondents) were against the idea of marriage with a person carrying the mutated DNA.

DNA mutation for breast cancer not only changes people’s perspective on marriage, but also on childbirth.

Among 744 respondents with the intention to have children, 36 percent said that they would give up on having children if they turned out to be carrying the mutated DNA.

“It is true that the mutated DNA raises the risk of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer, but it doesn’t mean that whoever carries it always ends up getting cancer,” said Dr. Kim Sung-won, a breast cancer expert and director of Daerlim St. Mary’s Hospital.
