INCHEON, May 30 (Korea Bizwire) — On September 15, 1950, amidst the Korean War, South Korean and United Nations forces initiated a pivotal operation by landing at Inchon. This strategic site, known for its treacherous tides, posed a challenge even in broad daylight.
Despite the adverse conditions, a contingent of 100,000 troops and a fleet managed to successfully and dramatically land on the shores of Wolmido Island. The key to their safe arrival amidst the darkness was the illumination provided by the Palmido Lighthouse. Guiding their way through the night, this lighthouse played a crucial role in Operation Chromite (Incheon Landing Operation)
This year marks the 120th anniversary of this cultural heritage site, recognized as Korea’s first and oldest modern lighthouse. On the night of June 1, 1903, exactly 120 years ago, the lighthouse embarked on its illustrious journey. Positioned atop Palmido, a small island in the West Sea, it began shining its brilliant light into the vast ocean.
The history of this lighthouse carries a painful legacy for the Korean Peninsula. Its construction was a consequence of the Treaty of Kanghwa Island with Japan in 1876. Under this treaty, Korea was compelled to open the port of Incheon and construct a lighthouse.
In response to Japanese pressure, Korea established a governmental office dedicated to lighthouse affairs in 1902. The construction process commenced earnestly, culminating in the lighting of the lighthouse on June 1, 1903.
After serving its purpose for a century, the lighthouse ceased functioning in 2003 upon reaching the end of its lifespan. However, diligent repairs conducted every five to seven years have ensured its good condition to this day. As a new lighthouse has taken over its role after a century of silence, the Incheon Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries will host a commemorative event on Palmido Island.
This event, marking the 120th anniversary of the lighthouse’s inaugural lighting, will commence after sunset at approximately 5:30 p.m. and continue until sunrise the following day, similar to the ceremony held for the 110th anniversary.
