SEOUL, Nov.19 (Korea Bizwire)A new study shows that people who drink between three and five cups of coffee every day live longer than those who don’t.

According to a paper published in ‘Circulation’, an international medical journal,  by a research team at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, those who drink three to five cups of coffee a day have a lower chance of getting heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, adult diabetes and strokes. The study also revealed that coffee drinkers are less likely to commit suicide.

The research team observed 168,000 women and 40,000 men over a period of 30 years, analyzing their coffee intake and the correlation with their life expectancy every four years.

An analysis of the results showed that people who drank three to five cups of coffee every day lived three to seven years longer than those who didn’t.

The researchers also noted that decaffeinated coffee had the same effect. This shows that it was the substance in the coffee beans themselves rather than caffeine which caused the effect.

However, among those who had less than three cups or more than five cups, coffee had no effect on their life expectancy.

The research team explained that though the mechanism is still not clear, bioactive substances in the coffee such as magnesium and chlorogenic acid, which is a type of polyphenol, lower inflammation and insulin resistance in the body, helping coffee drinkers to avoid disease.
