SEOUL, Dec. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — A majority of software developers in South Korea work overtime but are overall satisfied with their jobs, a survey showed Tuesday.
Local pollster Open Survey conducted a study of 286 developers nationwide, in which 81.1 percent said they had worked overtime in the previous three months.
Roughly one third worked less than three hours of overtime, while 25.2 percent worked three to seven hours, and 14 percent seven to 12 hours of overtime each week.
Another 8 percent worked more than 12 hours of overtime.
While struggling with a heavy workload, 64.3 percent of developers were satisfied with their jobs.
Their level of satisfaction rose along with the size of the developing team. Mobile app developers had the highest proportion of those who were satisfied with their jobs (76.9 percent).
In contrast, only 54.5 percent were satisfied with their employer. Mobile app developers had the highest proportion of those who were satisfied with their employers (76.9 percent).
When choosing an employer, a majority of developers looked primarily at the opportunity for growth (32.2 percent), followed by the company’s growth potential (24.8 percent) and wages and bonuses (24.5 percent).
Developers were most frustrated with the “pressure to grow” (46.5 percent), followed by frustration over following tech trends (44.1 percent) and anxiety towards the future (32.2 percent).
