SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — Children and teenagers from households with lower incomes have lower satisfaction in engaging with family members and friends, a government report has showed.
Statistics Korea conducted a survey of children and teens between 9-18 years of age in 2020, which showed that the satisfaction level of engaging with family members among them from adolescents making less than 1 million won (US$812) per month scored 7.04 points out of 10 on average.
In contrast, the satisfaction level of engaging with family members among those from households making more than 6 million won was 8.51 points.
The satisfaction level of engaging with friends among children and teens from households making less than 1 million won was no higher than 7.31 points, which was lower than those from households making more than 6 million won (8.22 points).
The level of income indicates the financial resources that can be spent to sustain relationships with friends, such as gifts or engagement activities. Based on the level of income, their satisfaction level in relationships may deteriorate.
Lower household income and the ensuing material deficiency can also hurt their relationships with family members, the report said.
Adolescents between the age of 9 and 18 from households making less than 1 million won in 2020 scored 6.27 points in terms of the belief that their work was worthwhile, compared to 7.02 points for those from households making more than 6 million won.
