SEOUL, Jun. 25 (Korea Bizwire) – Animal rights groups are advocating for a quick approval of an animal protection bill that will ensure the slaughtering of animals follows a certain procedure outlined by law.
Civic groups like Care and Korea Association for Animal Protection held a press conference on Thursday in front of the National Assembly in Seoul’s Yeouido district to explain that the current animal protection law is flawed, as it was developed in an ad hoc fashion and is not comprehensive in nature.
Earlier on Wednesday, assemblyman Pyo Chang-won of the Democratic Party proposed a revision of the animal bill that would overtly ban animal slaughter.
The revised bill would ban the killing of all animals with the exception of livestock slaughtered in a manner outlined by the public health control act and other relevant laws.
A new clause was added to allow the killing of animals only to prevent imminent danger imposed on humans by the animals.
Animal rights activists welcomed the newly proposed bill, stating that the legislation would “fundamentally solve issues surrounding animal abuse on a wider scale.”
