SEOUL, April 22 (Korea Bizwire)Daum Kakao, which operates South Korea’s top mobile messenger KakaoTalk, said Wednesday it is “considering” taking over U.S.-based messenger service Path, although no details have been decided.

“It is true that our working-level team has reviewed the plan (to take over Path),” an official from Daum Kakao said. “However, nothing has been decided regarding the plan.”

Industry watchers said the deal will help Daum Kakao tap deeper into the Southeast Asian market, as the U.S. messenger service is more popular in Indonesia than elsewhere.

Daum Kakao operates KakaoTalk, a free mobile messenger that has 35 million local users in the country with a population of 50 million. It also has about 152 million users worldwide in 15 languages, including Indonesian.

The firm, which came out of a merger between Kakao and South Korean portal operator Daum Communications in October, has been rolling out various projects to expand its revenue base and venture into the global market.

In February, the company said it will work with South Korean game developers to help them publish mobile game apps on Chinese platforms to expand its footing in the world’s most populous country.
