SEOUL, Feb.17 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI) has announced plans to build a five-story wooden building by 2018, and a 10-story wooden apartment building by 2022.

The institute released a report outlining the results of a study examining the feasibility of constructing tall buildings out of wood.

Manufacturing technologies for materials that would make up the structure, energy efficiency improvements, design techniques for wooden structures, and examples of multiple story wooden buildings such as the Forest Genetic Resources Department’s research center were introduced in the report.

The wood structure technologies developed by the KFRI were applied in the construction of a research center used by the Forest Genetic Resources Department. The four-story center was the first large building in Korea to be constructed from wood. The wooden structure construction was finished last year, and the center is scheduled to be completed in April.

Buildings in urban areas that are built with wood can offer a long-term carbon storage solution. As a result, wood construction could be developed as an eco-friendly building method that could take action against global warming.

The ‘Start House’ (9 stories, 2009) in London, England, and ‘Forte’ (10 stories, 2012) in Melbourne, Australia, both feature wood structure construction, and an 18-story wood structure building is being built in Vancouver, Canada.

Officials at the KFRI commented that wood structure buildings can be a reasonable countermeasure for humanity against climate change, as the wood can store carbon that is generated in urban areas. They also emphasized that the industry players should cooperate to advance further research.
