SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — Of the 130 provisions laid out in the current edition of the Constitution, people were found to most favor Article 1, which states that the sovereign power of the nation belongs to its people and that the nation is a democratic republic.
This is according to a survey carried out by the Constitutional Court of Korea in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of its establishment.
The survey asked 1,048 Korean citizens about their favorite provision within the Constitution, to which 27.3 percent of the respondents answered the abovementioned article.
Article 1 of the Constitution is composed of two clauses. The first clause reads, “the Republic of Korea shall be a democratic republic.”
Clause 2 states that “the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea shall reside in the people, and all state authority shall emanate from the people.”
Article 1 was borne from public sentiment that defied anti-democratic forms of government, declaring that all citizens have equal rights as members of a democratic nation.
The public’s second most favorite article in the Constitution, according to the survey, was Article 11, which notes that “all citizens shall be equal before the law, and there shall be no discrimination in political, economic, social or cultural life on account of sex, religion or social status.”
Of the survey respondents, 21.1 percent said Article 11 resonated with them.
Article 10 on the citizen’s right to happiness ranked third, with 19.4 percent of respondents acknowledging this article, followed by Article 37, which talks about the protection of freedom and rights of citizens being favored by 5.2 percent of all respondents.
