SEOUL, May 26 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean food companies are speeding up their efforts to develop eco-friendly tech and products aimed at reducing the use of plastic materials or creating biodegradable plastic.
Dongwon F&B Co. reduced the weight of the 500-milliliter and 2-liter bottles used for Dongwon Mineral Water by 15.7 percent and 9.4 percent, respectively, using less plastic.
The company said this will reduce the amount of plastic used by 1,200 tons each year.
Woongjin Foods Co. released the Ecoline models of its bottled sparkling water Victoria, which does not have any labels.
It allows for more efficient recycling and takes away the need to remove labels every time it is thrown away.
CJ Cheiljedang Corp. began mass production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a biodegradable plastic material.
PHA breaks down in various environments at sea or on land, and can be used as a primary component for making eco-friendly plastic products.
CJ Cheiljedang plans to expand its production of PHA to 65,000 tons by 2025.
