Gaming Industry Employees Burdened with Overtime

SEOUL, Jan. 31 (Korea Bizwire)Employees of companies in the video game industry work overtime an average of 2.6 days a week, a recent report showed.

In particular, it has been found that workers in development, technology, game management and quality assurance (QA) do overtime on a regular basis.

According to a survey of 440 workers in the industry by GAMEJOB, a gaming industry job portal, they work overtime 2.6 times a week on average.

In particular, development and technology overtime was 2.8 times a week, game operation and QA 2.7 times a week, and management support 2.7 times a week, which is more frequent than other jobs.

In addition, when asked, “Do you work overtime often?” two out of five respondents, or 40.9 percent, said they work overtime.

The biggest reason, cited by 38.2 percent of the participants, was because of too much work in a certain period of time. The second reason was due to “unpredictable tasks”, accounting for 26.4 percent.

This was followed by answers such as “unavoidable situation of overtime work,” accounting for 21.4 percent and due to “lack of manpower in the company/team,” accounting for 16.4 percent.

Some 63 percent of industry workers thought it was “not natural to have to do overtime”.

When asked who should decide whether overtime was necessary, however, 51.3 percent said they work overtime because “the situation makes them do so.”

Meanwhile, 33.6 percent, or one in three, said they do not get paid for overtime.

Some 53.6 percent said “they get paid for overtime”, while 11.8 percent said they would not be paid overtime, but were compensated with additional time off work.
