SEOUL, Dec 14 (Korea Bizwire) – Google will move into the Korean online news service market by launching “Google Play Newsstand,” directly competing with incumbents like Naver and Daum Kakao. Google Korea said on December 11 that it has unveiled a new smartphone app by which readers can subscribe to a variety of news publications on their smartphone and tablet screens. The app allows users to read magazine articles and blog postings as well as newspaper stories.
Newsstand will make recommendations to the user based on past reading patterns through automatic algorithms while showing the user’s favorite news publications in a folder called “My Library.”
Industry analysts expected Google’s latest move will help the nation’s mobile content service market growth rapidly. As the mobile ad market grows in leaps and bounds, the analysts said, the content market would expand to hitherto underserved areas such as fashion, beauty, and humor.
