SEOUL, Jan. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Co. and Cisco Systems Inc. said they will team up to produce a next-generation, hyperconnected car next year in the latest move to stay ahead of global competition as sweeping changes in transportation and mobility pick up pace.
The two firms aim to create a flexible and more secure platform that will offer a path to innovate and build on smart-vehicle solutions, Cisco said Tuesday in an announcement with Hyundai at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The two firms are exploring ideas like integration into Hyundai data centers, giving access to real-time data, and connecting cars to city infrastructure, enabling communication with lights and parking meters.
“Hyundai Motor Group’s ongoing collaboration with top global technology companies is a testament to our ‘open innovation’ spirit that will prepare us for continued leadership as transportation and mobility undergo an unprecedented evolution,” Hwang Seung-ho, executive vice president and head of Hyundai Motor Group’s Auto Intelligence Division, said.
“Our partnership with Cisco is an outstanding example of such efforts, and in 2019, we will unveil the first vehicle equipped with groundbreaking connected-car technologies jointly developed by the two companies.”
Next-generation, in-vehicle networks offer integrated, multi-layer security, as well as full end-to-end networking, allowing for true sensor integration. They will also enable new, high-speed services through an integration layer between software and legacy hardware, Cisco said.
It also said the development of first-generation solutions to enable 1Gbps Ethernet, which will significantly increase the in-vehicle bandwidth.
Ethernet-based software supports integrated data control, which allows for flexible expansion of connections to handle large data sets coming from various components in the vehicle simultaneously, according to Hyundai.
Ruba Borno, Cisco’s vice president of growth initiatives and chief of staff to the CEO, said Cisco is pleased to bring a standards-based approach in partnership with the automotive industry, one that will help accelerate innovation and increase the value to the consumer.
