SEOUL, June 10 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., a major South Korean builder, said Thursday it had been selected as the main research and development institution in charge of the national project in the Ministry of Science and ICT’s carbon capture and utilization field.

This project aims to optimize and demonstrate a hybrid carbon dioxide capture and liquefaction method for the production of so-called blue hydrogen, which is produced from natural gas and produces less CO2.

It will focus on developing the process of capturing and utilizing more than 100 tons of carbon dioxide.

The total research expenditure is estimated at 33.5 billion won (US$26.4 million), including 19.5 billion won in a government-supported development fund.

The objective is to internalize the technology by carrying out a 1 million-ton yearly commercialization process after on-site demonstrations in the hydrogen-specialized zone in Pyeongtaek, a city located 70 kilometers south of Seoul.

The project involves a total of 12 organizations, including Hyundai E&C, Hyundai Motor Co. and Lotte Chemical Corp. The total research period is 33 months.

“We will develop low-energy carbon dioxide capture and liquefaction technology with a 90 percent recovery rate and more than 95 percent purity,” Hyundai E&C said.
