BUSAN, Jul. 18 (Korea Bizwire) – A South Korean appeals court has rejected a lawsuit filed by civic groups in Busan seeking to prevent the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) from releasing treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the ocean.

The 5th Civil Division of the Busan High Court, presided over by Judge Kim Joo-ho, dismissed the appeal, upholding a lower court’s decision from August last year that had initially thrown out the case.

The legal action was initiated on April 22, 2021, by a coalition of 166 civic organizations from Busan. Operating under the banner of the Busan Civic Movement Headquarters Against the Life Extension of Gori Unit 2 and Nuclear Waste Facilities, the group sought a court order to prohibit TEPCO from discharging treated water from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.
