SEOUL, May 25 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean tech giant Kakao Corp. said Wednesday it will join RE100 and transition to 100 percent renewable energy by 2040.
RE100 is a global corporate initiative designed to shift energy use to renewable sources as a way to respond to climate change and other environmental issues.
Kakao plans to gradually increase its utilization of renewable energy for the operation of new internet data centers (IDCs) and headquarters buildings.
By 2030, it aims to rely on 60 percent renewable energy, reaching 100 percent by 2040.
Additionally, Kakao will establish an advisory panel comprising professionals from various fields to promote the social value of carbon neutrality.
Notably, Kakao had already achieved a significant milestone in its sustainability efforts last year by completely transitioning the electricity usage of its headquarters on the southern resort island of Jeju to eco-friendly solar energy.
