SEOUL, Dec. 23 (Korea Bizwire) – As cyber-attacks such as the breach of the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company’s systems by an unidentified hacker group increase, the South Korean government is stepping up its efforts to check emergency response plans in the private sector.
According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, an emergency meeting led by its vice-minister Yoon Jong-lok was held on December 22 to check how network infrastructure responds to cyber-attacks. Department heads responsible for network operations and private information protection from the major telecommunications providers such as SK Telecom, KT, LG Uplus and SK Broadband were present.
At the meeting, vice-minister Yoon ordered the network operators to implement increased monitoring, strengthen preemptive measures and form mutual-assistance systems such as information sharing in order to prevent cyber-attacks. Also, he asked them to prepare for the spread of APT malware.
He said, “We should do our best to prevent cyber-attacks targeting national level infrastructure and to avoid causing any harm to people. As network infrastructure such as broadband Internet plays a big role in people’s lives, we should keep our eyes open to increase cyber security.”
Meanwhile, the ICT ministry plans to conduct an inspection of major telecom infrastructure in some 100 data centers of major shopping malls, Internet portals and mobile carriers next year to increase surveillance on the cyber-attacks.
