SEJONG, Feb. 28 (Korea Bizwire) – Lobster imports have been setting yearly records since 2012, reaching the highest US$94 million last year, the Korea Customs Service said Tuesday.
Last year’s imports was a 13.7 percent increase from the previous year. In volume, last year’s imports amounted to 4,500 tons, up 17.1 percent from the year before.
Lobster imports have been replaced annually with a new record for the past five years, with 63.7 percent of them coming from Canada. Those from the United States accounted for 35.9 percent.
Imports tended to increase in December for Christmas and year-end demand, equal to 16.1 percent of the year’s total.
“We expect lobster imports to continue to increase due to the consistently changing dining culture and because import price fluctuations (for lobsters) are small,” a customs official said.
