SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Korea Bizwire)Municipalities in Gyeonggi Province are coming up with various projects to boost childbirth.

The city of Yongin decided to continue offering childbirth subsidies and give out ‘First Encounter Coupons’ to be introduced by the central government.

The First Encounter Coupons are 2-million-won (US$1,700) vouchers given out for each child to help parents buy child-rearing supplies, funded by the central government, the province, and the city.

Starting next year, any family with a newborn child who has lived in the city for more than 180 days will be entitled to receive both childbirth subsidies and First Encounter Coupons from the city.

The city of Suwon recently saw the first recipient of a special subsidy for giving birth to a third child or more.

Last month, the city enacted a city ordinance that gives out an additional 5 million won on top of a childbirth subsidy for families with three or more children.

Suwon provides childbirth subsidies for the second child and later. The city gives out 500,000 won for the second child, 2 million won for the third child, 5 million won for the fourth child and 10 million won for the fifth child.
