SEOUL, Feb. 8 (Korea Bizwire)Global streaming service Netflix saw a surge in the number of app users and overall usage time in South Korea thanks to its new series “The Glory,” data showed Tuesday.

Industry tracker WiseApp conducted a sample survey of Korean smartphone users (both Android and iOS), which showed that roughly 12.8 million people used the Netflix app in January, setting a new record.

The new high represented at increase of 15 percent compared to the 11.2 million Netflix users in November last year, prior to the release of “The Glory,”, the U.S. streaming giant’s new South Korean original.

The total usage time for the Netflix app also surged from 4 billion minutes in November last year to 4.9 billion minutes this January, up by 24 percent.

Compared to the 5.4 billion minutes in January of last year, however, usage time dropped by 9 percent.

“The abolishment of social distancing measures and an increasing number of outdoor activities since April has reduced the number of Netflix users and the overall usage time,” WiseApp said.

“Even so, the popularity of Korean original series like “Reborn Rich” and “The Glory” has led to an increase in the number of users and usage time.”
