SEOUL, Dec. 2 (Korea Bizwire) — The government plans to establish a legal support system to protect adolescents who lack legal awareness from going bankrupt due to the debts inherited from parents.
The Ministry of Justice said Wednesday that it will preemptively identify teenagers who need legal advice related to inheritance and provide them with legal support through consultations with related authorities.
When it comes to adolescents who lack legal knowledge and response capability, there have been some cases in which individuals have filed for bankruptcy due to a failure to show their intention not to inherit from the deceased within the required period of time.
According to statistics from the Supreme Court, the number of adolescents who filed for bankruptcy during the period from January 2016 to March 2021 stood at 80.
In order to prevent such cases, the justice ministry established a legal support system through cooperation with the administrative and welfare departments of municipal governments and the state-run Korea Legal Aid Corp.
The legal support will be given to the adolescents who have no person with parental rights after the death of their parents or those who cannot expect help from the person with parental rights.
