SEOUL, June 16 (Korea Bizwire)Domestic internet users generally perceive online portals’ algorithmic recommendation services as useful, but a substantial portion of respondents expressed concerns about potential side effects, a survey showed Thursday.

According to a panel survey conducted by the Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Information Society Development Institute, 70.4 percent of respondents expressed their intention to continue using the algorithmic recommendation services provided by portals, while 68.5 percent expressed the same for YouTube.

Regarding the algorithm recommendations offered by portals, positive expectations such as ‘usefulness’ (68.7 percent) and ‘optimization for the intended purpose’ (68.2 percent) slightly outweighed negative expectations such as ‘creation of biased value’ (53.3 percent) and ‘concerns about personal information leaks’ (52 percent).

Similarly, for the YouTube algorithm recommendation service, positive expectations such as ‘usefulness’ (65.7 percent) surpassed negative expectations like ‘creation of biased value’ (50.2 percent).

Respondents displayed high expectations for robots (89.3 percent), autonomous driving (87.8 percent), and kiosks (87.6 percent).

However, their expectations for blockchain (73.4 percent) and augmented reality/virtual reality technology (72.4 percent) were relatively low.

In the meantime, only 12.7 percent of the respondents reported having used metaverse platforms. Among those, the majority (77.9 percent) stated that their primary use was for gaming purposes.
