SEOUL, Feb. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s kimchi exports to Germany doubled last year after an appearance in the German media, with word that kimchi is helpful in strengthening immunity against the coronavirus spreading rapidly by word of mouth.
The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency’s German office in Frankfurt reported a 118.9 percent increase in South Korea’s kimchi exports to Germany last year, reaching a value of US$1.1 million.
Among members of the European Union, Germany is the second largest importer of South Korean kimchi, with imports up tenfold since 2012 to surpass the $1 million hurdle last year.
Rewe, one of Germany’s most popular on- and offline supermarket franchises, recently began selling kimchi.
T-online, Germany’s largest news portal website with more than 180 million visitors each month, posted an article on kimchi’s healthy effects in November of last year.
German distributors including Rewe and Kaufland are offering tips on how to make kimchi. The famous South Korean fermented side dish received 9 points out of 10 on Rewe’s nutrition assessment.
