SEOUL, May 22 (Korea Bizwire) – A customized shopping app created by a South Korean startup company that recommends clothes for customers based on their body shape, skin tone and the occasion has made its debut in New York’s fashion industry.

42 Media, a startup company consisting of young South Koreans in their 30s who have studied abroad, has launched a new big data-based personalized shopping app called Suggesty, the company announced yesterday.

“A lot of young South Korean businessmen and women are not interested in branching out into the international market in fear of failure, and tend to only focus on the domestic market. We want to prove that a startup company can be successful abroad,” the company official said.

In addition to body type and skin complexion, the app also takes into account the occasion.

Fashion recommendations on the app will be based on input from professional stylists collected through big data technology.

Though the company only has seven employees, most of the capital has been provided by angel investors, a term that refers to individuals who provide capital for a business startup typically in return for shares.

The fairly new company was able to embark on its app making process after being chosen to receive help from an Israel-based venture capital company, Yozma Group’s startup supporting program Yozma Accelerator.

“Upon typing “blue shirt” on the internet, you are inundated with tens of thousands of shirts, which often throws online shoppers for a loop. As this kind of conventional search method has reached its limitations, it’s now time to focus on meeting the needs of customers,” said Kang Sang-woo, a representative of the company.

Kang also said his company plans to branch out into the Chinese and ASEAN markets, where South Korean clothing brands are viewed favorably, after commercializing the app in the U.S.
