ANSAN, Aug. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – Sihwa Lake, once synonymous with pollution, is born again as a repository of the local ecosystem. To spread the word, two college students crossed the lake in a raft made of PET bottles.
In Chi-gwang (25) and Yoo Sol (25) are high school buddies. They agreed to cross Sihwa Lake on a PET bottle raft to change the perception of people who think that the lake is polluted and dead.
In June, they contacted the local government to convey their idea, and asked for help. With the cooperation of the city, the two created a raft out of 230 PET bottles. They also did a test run.
On August 20, the two students departed from the waterfront near Gojan-dong, and arrived at the old Bangameori Quay. They covered a distance of around 20km. It took about six hours.
In order to save strength, the students also took into consideration the operation schedule for electricity generation at the Sihwa tidal power plant.
The city of Ansan has been very supportive of the two students, and supported them to cross the lake safely.
“We started this challenge to diminish the misconception of people with regards to Sihwaho Lake,” said In. “We are happy to succeed in crossing it safely.”
