Muan, S. Korea, August 02 (Korea Biz Wire) – Jeollanam-do announced that the ‘Korea Open Hovercraft Race’ will be held on Myeongsasimni beach, Wando island for two days from August 3rd. 33 racers from 12 countries including the US and the UK will compete in the first hovercraft race to be held in Korea. The event was organized to promote leisure sports on beaches and mud flats, as well as to vitalize tourism in the region.
Hovercraft races fill beaches with great speed and adventure, and are popular in various countries such as New Zealand, Australia, the US, and the UK. In preparation for the inaugural ‘Korea Open’, co-hosts Jeollanam-do and Wando-gun have already pre-tested the track with hovercrafts. In addition to the race, various other events have been prepared, including making model hovercrafts, maneuvering remote controlled hovercrafts, and riding actual hovercrafts.
This year’s race will be divided into the ‘international elite race’ and the ‘amateur race’. The preliminary rounds for both races will be held in the morning of the first day, and the finals on August 4th. There will be a friendly race with racers from both classes participating during the afternoon on the 3rd.
Lee Seung-ok, head of the department of tourism and culture at the Jeollanam-do office, says, “With the successful hosting of the first ever hovercraft race in Korea, we hope to advertise Jeollanam-do as a great place for ocean leisure sports, as well as to contribute to the growth of various industries related to ocean leisure sports.”
