SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — Fast-food chains are scrambling to introduce kiosks for unmanned transactions.
McDonald’s Korea, ever since the introduction of the first kiosk in 2015, now currently has kiosks at 280 locations, accounting for 70 percent of some 400 restaurants in the country.
KFC Korea vowed to set up kiosks at all 200 stores in the country in 2017, fulfilling its promise in 2018.
Shinsegae Food Inc., the food manufacturer of South Korean retail giant Shinsegae, requires all No Brand Burger stores to set up kiosks.
Kiosks are slowly replacing cashiers, with major franchises relocating these employees to the kitchen.
“One kiosk is capable of replacing one cashier,” said a source familiar with the food industry. “Since each kiosk costs 4 million won (US$3,600), it helps reduce labor cost for employers.”
