GIMCHEON, Sept.11(Korea Bizwire) – Korea Expressway Corporation (KXCO) announced on Wednesday that it had conducted a nationwide crackdown on vehicles with unpaid tolls, taxes, and fines, in collaboration with local governments and police agencies.

The operation utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology at eight major toll gates across the country.

The crackdown involved 70 personnel tasked with recovering overdue highway tolls, unpaid car taxes, and outstanding fines, as well as targeting illegally registered vehicles.

As a result of the enforcement effort, KXCO collected 53 million won in overdue tolls, local governments recovered 9 million won in unpaid car taxes, and police agencies collected 4 million won in fines.

Authorities also impounded 62 illegally registered vehicles that owed significant amounts.

Central to the operation was an AI-powered route prediction system developed by KXCO, which analyzes the traffic history and patterns of vehicles with outstanding toll debts.

The system tracks toll-delinquent vehicles as they enter the expressway and predicts their travel routes and likely exit points, providing this information to toll collectors for targeted enforcement.

Since its introduction in April, the AI system has proven highly effective, generating 220 million won (approximately $212,000) in enforcement revenue by July, more than doubling the collections from the same period last year.

“We will continue to enhance AI-enabled predictive enforcement and respond firmly to deliberate toll delinquency, such as unauthorized use of High Pass lanes,” said a KXCO official, emphasizing the agency’s commitment to leveraging technology to combat toll evasion.
