SEOUL, March 20 (Korea Bizwire) – Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, who was supportive of the months-long protests that finally led to the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye, is poised to get behind calls for further recognition of the public’s major role in bringing about a peaceful transition of power.
In an interview with Yonhap news, the mayor of Seoul said, “When a country goes through politically difficult times, violence or terrorism comes to the surface at protests, however that was not the case this time here in Korea.
“The South Korean public acted a highly respectable way, and the months of candlelight vigils deserve to be called the ‘Citizen’s Glorious Revolution,’ he added.
Park also expressed his support to further recognize the significance of the historical event in Korean politics that occupied the heart of Seoul for months, saying, “What the public showed was peaceful, nevertheless persistent. I will find ways to help nominate the anti-Park protests for UNESCO’s Memory of the World program and the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Although only a parliament or a Nobel Peace Prize winner can recommend a nominee, the Seoul city government can help create an environment in which the peaceful protest in Seoul can gain recognition, such as through newspaper advertisements.
