SEOUL, April 4 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korea’s largest multiplex cinema chain, CGV, with theaters around the world, is turning its Yeouido branch into what it calls a ‘cultureplex’, at which different types of culture, entertainment and lifestyle events such as performances, art, concerts, exhibitions and napping places will be hosted.

This Friday, a classical piano concert headlined by pianist Jung Han-bin will be held at the Yeouido branch of CGV, the South Korean cinema chain announced today.

Dubbed the “man who reads music,” pianist Jung will play some ten pieces of music ranging from Chopin and Franz Schubert, and will offer commentary in between to explain the music, with the event scheduled to last for around two hours.

Special guest Kim Jung-won, who appeared in the South Korean film “For Horowitz”, will also make an appearance.

Lee Yu-hyun, culture mediator at CGV Yeouido, said, “A classic talk show is a new form of performance designed to familiarize the public with classical music.

“We’ll continue our efforts to provide various ways to experience arts and culture at a cinema,” Lee added.

From Monday to Thursday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., CGV will provide a midday nap service dubbed “Siesta Service” in the premium screening rooms of its Yeouido branch.

The service was named after the siesta, which refers to a short nap taken in the early afternoon. It’s a widely practiced way of life in Mediterranean and Southern European countries.

Each customer will be given two seats as well as a drink, a blanket and a pair of slippers to enjoy a nap in dim light, with relaxing music in the background.

Divided into three sections including one for men, one for women and another for couples, anyone can enjoy a power nap in the heart of a bustling shopping mall for 10,000 won ($9).

Last year, CGV practiced its “cultureplex” philosophy at four branches by hosting an exhibition showcasing illustrations of characters from Disney and Marvel Studio.

One CGV official said, “It was successful as some visitors visited CGV only to check out the exhibition without watching a movie.”
