SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Korea Bizwire) —  A recent study by the Korea Consumer Agency has found that all-in-one washer-dryers offer superior cleaning performance compared to conventional drum washing machines, marking a significant advancement in home appliance efficiency.

Among the tested models, LG Electronics’ Wash Combo (FH25EAE) demonstrated better washing performance than Samsung’s Bespoke AI Combo (WD25DB8995BB). However, Samsung’s model completed washing and drying cycles in less time, leading to lower annual electricity costs.

Both LG and Samsung introduced all-in-one washer-dryers last year, following the success of their tower-type washer-dryer units, which stack a separate washing machine and dryer.

Unlike their predecessors, the all-in-one models handle washing and drying in a single machine without requiring users to transfer laundry between cycles. Tower-type models are priced around 2 million won (approximately $1,380), whereas all-in-one models cost between 4.1 million and 4.2 million won ($2,830–$2,900).

Performance and Efficiency Findings

The study used standardized test fabrics with artificial stains to measure cleaning efficiency. The results showed that Samsung’s all-in-one model achieved a post-wash reflectance rate of 48%, slightly outperforming Samsung’s conventional drum washer (47%). LG’s all-in-one model, however, reached 51%, a four-percentage-point improvement over its traditional drum washer (47%), making it the leader in cleaning performance.

Despite LG’s superiority in washing efficiency, Samsung’s model completed washing and drying cycles more quickly. The Samsung unit required 10 minutes less than LG’s for both one-stop (wash + dry) and standalone wash cycles. The drying time difference was even more pronounced, with Samsung finishing 22 minutes faster than LG.

Energy consumption followed a similar pattern. Given its shorter cycle duration, Samsung’s model incurred an estimated annual electricity cost of 39,000 won ($27), which is 9,000 won ($7) less than LG’s 48,000 won ($33).

Drying Performance and Features

Both models demonstrated similar drying efficiency, with a drying completion rate exceeding 103%, comparable to standalone dryers. However, the maximum drying capacity of the all-in-one models is 15 kg, lower than traditional dryers, which exceed 20 kg.

Additional features also distinguish the two brands. Samsung’s model includes a pre-drying pause function, allowing users to remove delicate fabrics before drying begins, as well as an automatic door-opening feature at the end of the cycle. Meanwhile, LG’s unit supports an optional Mini Wash module, which can be purchased separately and attached to the base for small-load washing.

The Korea Consumer Agency advised consumers to consider their typical laundry needs, available space, and factors such as washing performance, cycle duration, electricity costs, and pricing before choosing an all-in-one washer-dryer.
