Jeju, July 22 (Korea Bizwire) – A new Provincial Park has opened on Jeju Island, where visitors can familiarize themselves with Jeju Gotjawal, also known as ‘the lungs of Jeju’.
‘Gotjawal’ is a word from the local Korean dialect of Jeju, with the two words ‘Got’, meaning ‘forest’ and ‘Jawal’ meaning ‘bushes’, joined together. It is the northern limit for tropical plants and the southern limit for polar plants, thus observation of the coexistence of the two plant types is possible. Gotjawal is also the origin of underground water, formed by rain leaching into the ground. It is also called the ‘Lungs of Jeju’, as it produces a significant amount of oxygen.
Kim Han-wook, the head of the Jeju Free International City Development Center, shows his anticipation in a comment. “Gotjawal has an elemental ecosystem, making it hard for the local people as well as tourists to visit. Since Gotjawal Provincial Park has been established, we hope that many locals and visitors can experience the exquisite ecology of Gotjawal, and relieve their stress in nature.”
