SEOUL, Feb. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of burglaries in South Korea has dropped as more people are staying indoors due to the coronavirus pandemic.
S-1 Corp., South Korea’s leading security solutions provider, analyzed customer data of 800,000 people, which showed that the number of burglaries last year dropped by 42 percent compared to the previous year.
Burglaries were most rampant in January 2020 (14.5 percent) just before the pandemic broke out. Normally, burglaries spike before the Lunar New Year holiday.
January was followed by April (10.3 percent), August (10.3 percent), and February (9.5 percent).
While burglaries typically peak in January before starting to drop gradually afterwards, last year saw another peak in April as the pandemic seemed to be contained.
Sorted by day, burglaries were most common on Mondays (17.6 percent), followed by Tuesdays (16 percent) and Sundays (14.9 percent), which was quite different from 2019 when burglaries were primarily committed on the weekend.
“Burglaries on the weekend have lessened significantly as more people are staying indoors due to the coronavirus spread,” S-1 said.
