LAS VEGAS & SEOUL, April 1 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics has unveiled its next-generation Onyx Cinema LED screen at CinemaCon 2025, the world’s largest film industry convention currently underway in Las Vegas. The announcement marks the latest advancement in Samsung’s push to redefine the cinematic viewing experience through projector-free LED screen technology.
Originally launched in 2017 as the world’s first cinema-grade LED screen, Onyx made history by becoming the first non-projection screen to receive certification from the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) for compliance with digital cinema standards.
The newly revealed Onyx model features 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160), supports up to 120Hz frame rate, and achieves 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, offering unmatched color accuracy, deep blacks, and high contrast. The screen comes in four standard widths—5m, 10m, 14m, and 20m—with pixel pitches ranging from 1.25mm to 5.0mm.
A scaling option also allows for custom installations beyond the standard sizes, enabling theaters to maximize screen size while maintaining cinematic aspect ratios.
With HDR (High Dynamic Range) support, the display can reach peak brightness levels of 300 nits—about six times brighter than traditional projector systems—delivering enhanced contrast and more lifelike visuals.

The new Onyx screen is compatible with a range of media servers including Dolby and GDC IMB, and supports multiple high-end cinema audio systems such as Dolby Atmos, JBL Surround by Harman, Meyer Sound, and QSC.
Samsung has already installed six Onyx screens at the historic Pathé Palace cinema in Paris, a 150-year-old opera house transformed into a modern movie theater. The company was also recognized at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) trade show in March for its technological innovation in commercial displays.
Samsung maintains ongoing partnerships with leading global studios, including Pixar, and remains the only player in the Cinema LED market to offer a 10-year extended quality assurance program.
“With the introduction of the world’s first Cinema LED screen, Samsung opened a new chapter in cinematic technology,” said Jeong Hoon, Executive Vice President of Samsung’s Visual Display Business. “Onyx sets a new benchmark for immersive, theater-only experiences that go beyond the limits of traditional projection.”
