SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s camping industry generated about 6.3 trillion won (US$4.55 billion) in sales last year, with the number of registered campgrounds estimated at 2,703, and both figures marked positive year-to-year growth thanks to the rising popularity of camping in the post-pandemic era.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization, the number of camping users (overnight stay basis) stood at 5.23 million last year, down 2 percent from 5.34 million a year ago.
Average household spending on camping stood at 465,000 won last year, up 18 percent year on year.
Despite a slight decline in the number of campers, the increase in spending per camping trip indicates a trend towards premium and specialty consumption.
When classifying camping users by age group, including day and overnight camping, the share of those in their 30s stood at 29.9 percent, higher than the 24 percent reported for those in their 40s and 18.7 percent for those in their 20s.
