BUSAN, Jan. 5 (Korea Bizwire)This year, subsidized dorm rooms will be opened to all postsecondary students who attend an educational institution located in the Busan Metropolitan Area and are from outside the city.

The subsidy program was launched last year to attract talented students to South Korea’s second-largest city and to financially assist young adults with their living expenses. Busan’s government has earmarked 180 million won total to support 300 students who qualify for the program.

Busan is the first municipality in South Korea to offer subsidized dorm rooms to postsecondary students who are studying away from home.

In March of last year, a fifteen-story residential building was constructed on the grounds of Pukyong National University. Named the United Busan Happy Dormitory, a portion of its 768 rooms are owned by the city of Busan.

Thanks to its convenient location near public transportation systems and top-notch amenities, the government-funded dorm has proven to be a big hit with students and their families alike.

Applications can be submitted on the United Busan Happy Dormitory website starting on January 8. The deadline for final applications is January 19.
