SEOUL, March. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Whisky is replacing wine as a liquor popular among South Korea’s younger generation.
GS25, the convenience store chain run by GS Retail Co., said that whisky sales jumped by 46.8 percent between 2019 and 2020, and 60.8 percent between 2020 and 2021.
Between 2021 and February of this year, whisky sales were up by 127.5 percent.
The proportion of consumers in their 20s and 30s grew from 51.3 percent in 2020 to 70.8 percent this February.
Sales of carbonated drinks, juice and others that can be mixed with whisky have also gone up including sales of tonic water, which jumped by 54.1 percent.
“Convenience stores have recently been seeing the rise of the so-called ‘modi-sumers’ (a combination of the terms ‘modify’ and ‘consumer’) who go beyond craft beer and wine to create unique drinks of their own, leading to higher whisky sales,” GS25 said.
