SEOUL, Feb. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — The government will introduce energy performance grades for all electronic vehicles, similar to fossil fuel cars, in order to encourage the development of highly efficient EVs.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy officially announced the new policy on Wednesday.
The government plans to divide energy performance into five grades based on the level of energy consumption, and require automakers to report and indicate the grades on the EVs.
If an EV’s energy consumption is more than 5.9 kilometers per 1 kilowatt hour (kWh), it will be categorized as grade 1.
Grade 2 EVs stand between 5.1 and 5.8 kilometers, Grade 3 EVs between 4.3 and 5 kilometers, Grade 4 between 3.5 and 4.2 kilometers, and Grade 5 below 3.4 kilometers.
According to the grading standards, 2 percent of all EVs registered as of last year are expected to qualify for grade 1, and 16.9 percent for grade 2.
In total, EVs with grades of 1 or 2 will account for less than 20 percent of all registered EVs.
