SEOUL, Nov. 21 (Korea Bizwire) – Firefighters in Gangwon Province will adopt modern technological advances like bodycams and drones as tools in their mission to put out fires and save lives.
Thanks to contributions by SK Telecom, the Gangwon Fire Headquarters will be stocked with 230 bodycams, four drones and a video encoder program called “T Live Caster”. The stockpile of gadgets will be distributed to 16 stations and the department’s search and rescue team.
The drones, equipped with thermographic cameras, are expected to be highly effective in tracking the scale and direction of forest fires in real time. More than 80 percent of Gangwon Province is mountainous territory blanketed with forests, and the ratio of firefighter per area is the highest of all South Korean provinces.
For those rescued and needing immediate medical attention, the bodycams will enable doctors to give instructions to the firefighters onsite on rudimentary treatment methods, reducing the odds of permanent damage or fatalities during evacuation.
T Live Caster will be run on hyper speed 5G networks to ensure maximum efficiency, according to both the Gangwon Fire Headquarters and SK Telecom.
Gangwon is the home province of Pyeongchang, the location of the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics. The Korea Tourism Organization anticipates 200,000 to 250,000 foreign visitors and 1.7 million attendees total during the Winter Games.
