GIMPO, May 24 (Korea Bizwire) – The city of Gimpo in Gyeonggi Province will host a whimsical Duck Race using rubber ducks next month, officials announced on May 23.

The family-friendly event, slated for June 2 near the Ara Marina waterfront in Gochon-eup, will see the iconic bathtime toys released into the current to float downstream toward the finish line.

A popular participatory contest worldwide, including the United States, the U.K. and Australia, the top 10 duck owners at Gimpo’s race will receive prizes like premium hair dryers, hotel vouchers and cruise tickets based on their ducks’ finish.

Given registration interest so far, organizers anticipate a cheerful scene of around 10,000 yellow rubber ducks bobbing along in the waters.

The Duck Race is a marquee feature of the 8th annual Aramarine Festival, Gimpo’s signature event celebrating the coastal city’s charms.

Those wishing to take part can pre-register on the festival’s website or sign up on race day, then purchase rubber ducks for 3,000 won apiece to release into the waters.

“The essence of a festival is escaping the routines of busy, tiring daily life for novel experiences that nourish like vitamins,” said a Gimpo official, adding, “We invite everyone’s keen interest and participation in this event.”
