DAEJEON, Jan. 27 (Korea Bizwire)A team of researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) have made a breakthrough in the field of robotics, unveiling on Thursday a four-legged robot called Raibo that can walk quickly even on challenging terrain like sandy beaches.

The research team developed technology that models the power that a walking robot receives from surfaces composed of granular material like sand with tiny particles and simulates the power to the four-legged robot.

The artificial neural network structure that the research team introduced is optimal for the four-legged robot to adapt to various types of terrain on its own, even without prior information.

The four-legged robot mounted with a learned neural network controller moved quickly on a sandy beach, and changed direction on top of an air mattress.

The Raibo walked at a rapid speed of 3.03 meters per second on a sandy beach where its legs were buried. Without additional adjustment, it also adapted well and walked stably even on grass, an athletics track, and solid ground.
