SEOUL, Sept. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — The government has decided to approve transparent OLED display advertising through the windows of public transport, welcome news for display maker LG Display Co., the only producer of such a product.
While announcing recent cases of regulatory innovation, the office of government policy coordination revealed that it had decided to approve the use of transparent OLED displays for subway window advertising.
Under the current Outdoor Advertisement Act, it is prohibited to use luminous window advertising on the exterior of public transport vehicles.
Nonetheless, it remained unclear whether LG Display’s transparent OLED displays would be subject to the regulation.
Against this backdrop, the office of government policy coordination made it clear that transparent OLED displays are not subject to the regulation on the basis of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s authoritative interpretation.
Transparent OLEDs can come in various designs since each pixel generates light for itself without using a backlight, and are therefore lighter, thinner and more transparent than conventional displays.
At present, LG Display is the only company that can mass-produce large transparent OLEDs.
