HONGSEONG, Dec. 11 (Korea Bizwire)Local authorities are stepping up to fight the spread of highly pathogenic bird flu.

South Chungcheong Province declared a ‘war on rodents’ this week (Dec. 7-11) to work with poultry farms to exterminate rats.

Farmers have laid rat poison in farms, streams and ponds. Some have installed nets to prevent rats from sneaking into farms.

North Chungcheong Province is also working with local authorities to encourage quarantine and rat extermination procedures every Wednesday and is also handing out subsidies for purchases of rat poison and traps.

Quarantine experts believe that rats are working as the primary source of virus spread, with a high chance that they have carried excrement of migratory birds found in farmlands or streams into poultry farms to spread the influenza.
