TAEAN, Aug. 22 (Korea Bizwire)A move to turn the popular surfing area of Mallipo Beach in Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province into an official surf spot is expected to come to fruition soon.

A meeting regarding this issue was held with over 20 participants including Taean-gun government officials, experts and surfing industry workers.

At the meeting regarding the launch of Mallipo Beach as a surfing spot, the main framework to establish a safety training center was discussed in addition to finding ways to bring Mallipo Beach back to its heyday, but this time around, as a beach specialized for surfers.

Of note, participants at the meeting displayed a unified will to create a surfing spot that will set itself apart from all others through the establishment of an indoor surfing pool and a virtual reality experience hall within the safety training center.

Since last year, Taean-gun began to benchmark other South Korean surfing hot spots such as Jukdo Beach in Yangyang, Gangwon Province and Songjeong Beach in Busan, before designating the Mallipo Beach surfing initiative as one of this year’s “strategic projects for the future.”

The beach is said to have appropriate waves for beginner and mid-level surfers, whose numbers have increased steadily over the years.

Last year, it was estimated that over 12,000 surfers came to ride the waves at Mallipo Beach.
