SEJONG, Sept. 18 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of criminal cases involving marijuana smuggling has reached a record high this year.
The Korea Customs Service reported there were 246 cases of marijuana smuggling as of August, with the amount of drugs seized reaching 55 kilograms, worth at least 1.7 billion won in total on the street.
Compared to 188 cases last year, drug trafficking jumped by 31 percent in the period between January and August.
The total weight of confiscated marijuana between January and August amounted to 55.09 kilograms, already surpassing last year’s record of 51.15 kilograms.
This is the second surge in drug trafficking since 2018.
