TAEAN, March 5 (Korea Bizwire) — A series of strong winds has brought hundreds of tons of waste to the coast of the Taean Peninsula in South Chungcheong Province.
The debris includes old fishing gear, styrofoam, plastic bottles, wooden sticks and others. The remains of an old refrigerator, tires, and other waste are also being found.
Taean County said that most of the waste is coming from China, carried by tidal currents to the coast. Many plastic bottles carried trademarks of Chinese companies.
“The Taean peninsula is completely surrounded by the sea. The change of tide here is pretty steep, and the proximity to China has resulted in large amounts of marine waste arriving on our shores,” a county official said.
