SEOUL, Nov. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — A “yellow carpet” was laid out on a popular tourist island in South Korea using autumn leaves.
Some 10 tons of autumn leaves were collected in Songpa District, Seoul to create a 100-meter-long “yellow carpet” on Nami Island, located in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.
The leaves are regarded as a nuisance in urban areas and are a major cause of drain blockages. It is costly to collect the leaves and send them to be incinerated.
The island has been collecting leaves for 17 years, an initiative that began based on the recognition that the trees on Nami Island shed their leaves in the earliest phase of the autumn season.
Nami Island’s leaf collection helps Songpa District save on the cost of cleaning up leaves, while offering tourists visiting the island a better chance to enjoy the autumn season.
